Klaus Huber

Von Zeit zu Zeit. Das Gesamtschaffen

Gespräche mit Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf

English edition

Klaus Huber, the most important Swiss composer, one of the most important figures of the generation of over 80-year-olds who have actively promoted the development of New Music since the Second World War, will receive the Salzburg Music Prize and Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2009. This honors a lifetime achievement that has not only produced an unusually rich and varied oeuvre. Klaus Huber was also one of the most sought-after composition teachers in the world from the 1960s to the 1980s. For the past 20 years, he has created an oeuvre that is second to none and is characterized by a new intervallic language, above all on the basis of third tones and Arabic modes, a polycultural approach and a constant expansion and opening of the deeply humanistic horizon of experience.

In the year of his 85th birthday, the sum of his musical thought is published in book form. From Time to Time is an unprecedented attempt in music history to present the entire compositional oeuvre programmatically and in terms of compositional technique, while at the same time articulating its intellectual, aesthetic and ethical foundations. Klaus Huber lays his cards on the table, so to speak. But not in an egocentric way as an autobiography or as a "technique de mon langage musical", but in a dialog with the composer Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf, who was his student 20 years ago and asks the decisive questions from an internal perspective and deepens the answers given.

This book contains over 100 illustrations, including numerous sketches, which illustrate Klaus Huber's compositional and working process. The works discussed range from the 1950s to the immediate present. Separate chapters are devoted to seven central works. A complete list of works rounds off the book.
